What Does a 120-Day Warranty Cover on a Refurbished Appliance?

Why Warranty Matters When Buying Refurbished

One of the most common questions we hear at Hoys Electrical is: "What exactly does the warranty cover?" It's a fair question — and an important one. A warranty is your safety net, and understanding what it includes (and what it doesn't) helps you buy with confidence.

All refurbished appliances sold by Hoys Electrical come with a 120-day warranty. Here's what that means in practice.

What the 120-Day Warranty Covers

Our 120-day warranty covers mechanical and electrical faults that arise through normal use of the appliance. This includes:

  • Motor failures – if the drum motor on a washing machine stops working
  • Heating element faults – if a tumble dryer or oven stops heating correctly
  • Control board or electronic failures – if the appliance stops responding or displays error codes
  • Pump failures – if a washing machine or dishwasher fails to drain
  • Compressor issues – if a fridge freezer stops cooling

In short: if the appliance develops a fault through no fault of your own within 120 days of purchase, we'll repair or replace it.

What the Warranty Doesn't Cover

Like any warranty, there are exclusions. Our 120-day warranty does not cover:

  • Cosmetic damage – scratches, dents, or marks that were present at the time of sale or caused after delivery
  • Accidental damage – faults caused by misuse, impact, or improper installation
  • Consumable parts – filters, door seals, and lint traps that wear through normal use
  • Faults caused by incorrect installation – for example, connecting a washing machine to the wrong water supply
  • Damage from power surges – unless caused by a fault in the appliance itself

How to Make a Warranty Claim

If your appliance develops a fault within the 120-day warranty period, the process is straightforward:

  1. Contact us – get in touch with Hoys Electrical as soon as the fault appears. Don't attempt to repair the appliance yourself, as this may void the warranty.
  2. Describe the fault – tell us what the appliance is doing (or not doing), any error codes displayed, and when the fault started.
  3. We'll arrange an assessment – in most cases, we can assess the fault quickly and arrange a repair or replacement.

We aim to resolve warranty issues as quickly as possible, because we know a broken washing machine or fridge freezer isn't something you can wait weeks to fix.

Is 120 Days Enough?

A 120-day warranty (just over four months) is standard for refurbished appliances and gives you meaningful protection during the period when any latent faults are most likely to appear. Most mechanical faults in appliances show up within the first few months of use — so if your appliance passes the 120-day mark without issue, it's a very good sign it will continue to perform reliably.

For additional peace of mind, you may also want to consider an extended warranty or appliance insurance policy from a third-party provider.

Your Consumer Rights

In addition to our 120-day warranty, you are also protected by the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Under this legislation, goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. If a fault arises that was present at the time of sale, you may have additional rights beyond the warranty period. We always aim to act fairly and in line with your legal rights.
